As hard water passes through the resin bed, calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium, delivering scale-free water. When the resin is exhausted the control valve regenerates it with brine from the salt tank and returns to service automatically. Meter-controlled valves regenerate only when needed, minimising salt and water use.
